Chained

In 2003 to the website of the law enforcement agency of one of the cities in Utah (the address is not revealed) every day came messages from some young girl named Diane.

According to those messages, she was being held captive and her attacker forced her to write those letters. The last message was the one quoted below. Lots of typos and mistakes were corrected for readability.  

My name is Diane. I'm 19 years old. Right now I'm chained to the wall of my own room. I can barely move, only my right hand is free with which I am writing this. He makes me do it, but always closely monitors while I write so that I did not write something wrong. I tried calling for help, but he noticed it and hurt me for it. I'm scared. Right now he is standing here and looking at me, he wants me to tell you the whole story from the beginning.  

A month ago, I went with my mom and dad to the countryside for a weekend. We have a large two-story house there, located an hour's drive from the city. We arrived in the evening, unpacked our things, had dinner together and enjoyed a hot tub. Then I went to sleep to my room. At night I was awakened by the creaking of my door. When I opened my eyes, I saw a silhouette of a man in the doorway. I thought it was my dad and I called him, but he stood there motionless. Then I got out of bed to turn on the light, but he hit me on the head with something heavy and I lost consciousness. 

When I came to I had a horrible headache. I was chained to a wooden wall of my room so that I could not move my hands or feet. All of my hair and clothes were covered in blood. He entered the room, and dragged my parents inside who were unconscious. He didn’t have a real face, it was skin… human skin stretched over his head and stitched in the back. First he stared into my eyes for a while. Then he left and returned with a hatchet. 

First he dismembered my dad who never regained consciousness. And he made me look. I lost consciousness several times, but he brought me back using smelling salts. When he was done with my dad, he put his head next to my mother. He then brought her to senses. I felt so sorry for her. Then, he took my mother and dragged her into another room by her hair. I was chained to the wall and could hear her screams. I didn’t know what he was doing with her, but soon the screams stopped. I passed out again. When I regained consciousness, I found out that it was already the next day. He was gone all day. I cried constantly, and a minced body of my father was scattered throughout the room. 

Nigh. He came back. I started to beg him to let me go, but as he came close to me, he whispered in my ear: "Bon appetite" and left again. Five minutes later he returned with a large pot in his hands. From the smell and total madness in my head I puked. After removing the lid, he scooped up the contents with his hand and tried to make me it that. I didn’t open my mouth. So he punished me. I no longer have my little finger. I lost consciousness. 

I opened my eyes, and it was yet the next day. The stump of my finger was sewn up. I didn’t feel any pain. I had a strange feeling: I did not feel fear or bitterness. I was very sleepy. 

The next day I had a terrible stomach ache, so I did not drink and did not eat for two days. He again came to me with the same pot. Through tears, I began eating, because I knew what was going to happen if I refused. This was some bitter boiled meat. After he fed me, he left. I was forced to go to the toilet where I was chained. My hands and feet were swollen. The pain was terrible and I couldn’t stand it. I kept loosing consciousness. He did not show up that night and the next thing I knew - it was a new day.  

All my attempts to escape came to nothing. This has continued for several days. On one occasion when he came to feed me, I found a human finger in a pot. There was my mother's wedding ring on it. I realized that I ate my mother. Terrible tantrum. Trying to escape again. He hit me on the head with a pot. Darkness... 

I open my eyes again. Feel up the inside of my mouth with my tongue. Three teeth are missing. There is a pool of blood, plier are lying next to me, also covered in blood. Bastard tortured me when I was unconscious. 

Horrible pain came all over. He heard me cry, came in and gave me some sort of injection. Again I had a strange feeling: no pain, no emotions. He put a table next to me and on it my computer. "Tell them," – he whispered and released my right hand. There was no choice, so I began writing. 

This happens every day. He feeds me, gives me some kind of injection so I did not feel a horrible pain in my bones and from the ulcers on my legs, and makes me write. I can’t get out. Even if I'll free myself from the shackles, I wouldn’t be able to run; I'm in the same position for almost two months. I once tried to write a letter asking for help, but he noticed. It was horrible to watch as he stuck a nail into my toe on the right leg. But after each injury he treats the wound. After that incident he began watching closely what I am writing.  

Now he's out of the room, he is not here! PLEASE, HELP ME! I am in the apartment building number 2 in oblassssrldii 8np0e ipsh lschmi97 pm7gt shogitldti lztschmo9g...

This was the last message the website received. They could never figure out the location of the sender.
